North Korea acknowledged that hours later in an announcement broadcast on state TV, saying the satellite had failed to enter into orbit. Within minutes of the early morning launch, the US and South Korea declared it a failure.

Pyongyang had said the rocket launch was aimed at putting a satellite into orbit for peaceful research purposes to mark the centenary of the birth of its founding leader Kim Il-Sung.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the launch as "deplorable and a threat to regional stability."

Similarly, Western Leaders rushed to denounce the launch turning a blind eye to thousands of ballistic missiles and nuclear heads owned by many of these states on top of which is the US.
The leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized nations meeting in Washington condemned the launch.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said that "all the members of the bloc agreed to be prepared to take further action against North Korea in the Security Council."
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council, meanwhile, scheduled an emergency meeting for later Friday, and Washington said it was suspending plans to contribute food aid to the North in exchange for a rollback of its nuclear programs.

Space officials in Pyongyang told reporters earlier in the week that "it is North Korea's sovereign right to develop its space program."
