The Prosecutor of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, Daniel A. Bellemare said on Tuesday that "the indictment marks the launch of the judicial phase of the tribunal's work. I want to thank Lebanese authorities for their support and ongoing assistance."

He added that the tribunal has been essential, describing it as "the fruit of the hard work under challenging circumstances of all those involved in the process."
Bellemare vowed "My team and I will do everything that is humanly and legally possible to ensure that the truth emerges and that the criminals are brought to justice".

He said that the indictment is only a first step in the collective quest of the STL to end impunity in Lebanon.

On the content of the indictment, Bellemare said "I cannot reveal either the charges or the name of the person or persons referred to in the indictment," reiterating that the content of the document will be made public in due course and when so ordered by the pre-trial judge.

On Monday, the Registrar of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), Herman von Hebel confirmed in a statement that the STL General Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare has presented the indictment to the Pre-Trial Judge Daniel Fransen.

The statement said that "The documents and evidences related to later former PM Rafiq Hariri's assassination were handed in to the tribunal's registry at 16:35 Monday afternoon, January 17, 2011. It added that "Pre-Trial Judge Fransen will examine the presented documents, while the content of the indictment will remain secret at this stage of time."
