Sara Ibrahim,16-02-2010

"If you don't believe in religion and do not fear the hereafter, then at least be free from Tyranny and Arrogance." Imam Hussein (as).

The Grandson of the Holy prophet of Islam, Muhammad (pbuh), was a hero that drew the strongest path against despotism. Imam Hussein was victorious despite being massacred in battle; this was a message to the whole world, to all the oppressed communities, regardless of religion and race. The battle of Karbala signifies a lesson that the oppressed should never submit to tyranny and oppression. Face the belligerence and never accept injustice, even if your soul was the price.

The great school of Karbala still runs in the blood of the Mujahedeen, which run towards martyrdom with pride. July war 2006 was the best proof on that, for if it wasn't for the precious blood of the martyrs victory was to never be achieved.

Not everyone understands this great path, and not everyone appreciates martyrs. For example, scores of westerners do not admit them, and consider them as "Suicidal" or "Suicide Bombers".

The strangest aspect of the phenomenon of Martyrdom for many Westerners: when parents of a martyr are interviewed. They cry but at the same time they seem happy, and are even willing to send another child off to battle.

Black and WhiteSheikh Shafiq Jradeh, Head of the Institute of Constructive Knowledge in Beirut, had a say on that, "A Martyr is a hero trying to defend the rights of his people, trying to preserve his family and his belonging in his own country." He added that most of the Martyrs come from a rich social class and so this proves that the Martyr does not undergo social pressure. "Most Westerners do not understand that the aspect of Martyrdom is related to a social and spiritual stance." he said.

Sheikh Shafiq also said that there is more than one reason leading to Martyrdom, starting from the commitment to the case and moving on to improving religious life. "The Martyr has everything to do with the culture of life, unlike the Suicidal who loses the link to life". He added.

He noted that the Martyr has the right to defend his own beliefs, knowing that we live in a region of domination and cruelty by the presence of "Israeli" occupation on our lands. "This kind of defense and struggle is essential in achieving a conspicuous approach in the social and political trail", he said.

Sheikh Shafiq continued that not any person can be a Martyr; it takes a lot of stages to reach to this sacred level. "The Martyr is a combination of courage, commitment, strength, wisdom and determination." He added.

He ended saying that the term "Suicide bombing" is one invented by Zionists to vilify Muslims and that should be abandoned, for the Suicide bombings themselves are the invention of non-Muslims.

From the Religious point of view, suicide is against any religion, but martyrdom is not. The aim of the Martyr is to protect his nation by fighting the infidels, and this is a right. Unlike the Suicidal who kills himself out of depression and that is called egotism.

Black and White
To get closer to what a Suicidal feels when approaching suicide, one of the people who were about to lose their life wanted to share their experience with us.

T.F, a 24 year old girl who had a terrible childhood, was about to lose her soul if it wasn't for her friend who saved her at the last moment. "I was raised in a very poor neighborhood, my dad left us when I was 5 years old, and my mom had to work as a maid in order to make a living.", she said with an ashamed tone. "I never knew what it was like to have a father, nor what it was like to eat a whole meal of healthy food." she added.

She continued describing her poor deprived life; she said that it was getting harder day by day, until she decided to end it by taking a whole bottle of pills. "Life wasn't worth living anymore, I was sick of living poor and depressed, I couldn't sleep, nor could I smile, I was so frustrated." she cried.

T.F said that if it weren't for her friend who passed by to her place by coincidence, she would not have been here now. "Things aren't any better now, but I grew up to understand that life isn't easy and that we have to struggle to live, and that's what I'm doing now." She said with a smile of hope on her face.

The Suicidal runs after death for the sake of ending his misery, yet the Martyr runs to the battle for the sake of giving life to others. One of the great Mujahideen once said: " The moment the Martyr dies is the moment he lives, and the moment the Suicidal kills himself is the moment of his afflict and true death."

Black and WhiteDr. Muzayan Osseiran, a Psychologist in Lebanon, explained such Suicidal behaviors saying: " The behaviors of a Suicidal often occur in a response to a hard situation they are going through either due to emotional trauma, financial problems, death of a loved one or a serious physical illness."

"Suicide is the act of deliberately taking one's own life and the Suicidal behavior is any deliberate action with potentially life-threatening consequences, such as taking a drug overdose or deliberately throwing yourself from a building." she said.

She added that the Suicidal have a very weak ego, and are very fragile. Their act of suicide is often meant to take revenge on parents and society, for it is a selfish act. She noted that it is an aggression towards others.

When asked about the Martyrs she said, "A Martyr is a follower of the path of Imam Hussein (a.s) who sacrificed himself and his family for the sake of Islam. A Martyr is immortal in the memories of everyone around him, and is a hero that will forever be praised".

Ahmad Ammar, a Lebanese detainee that stayed in the "Israeli" prisons for 14 years, shared his experience about his days with the enemy and with his friends that were gifted with Martyrdom.

He started with a Qur'an Verse "O ye who believe! Shall I lead you to a bargain that will save you from a grievous Penalty? That ye believe in Allah and His Apostle, and that ye strive (your utmost) in the Cause of Allah, with your property and your persons: That will be best for you, if ye but knew! He will forgive you your sins, and admit you to Gardens beneath which Rivers flow, and to beautiful mansions in Gardens of Eternity: that is indeed the Supreme Achievement." (61:10-12)

Black and WhiteHe said that Martyrdom is the greatest deeds in the Path of Allah, and it is rewarded with Paradise. As for Suicidal it is the reprehensible of deeds and is rewarded with Hell.

"The Martyr is lead by his mind, his love of life and his joy, unlike the Suicidal which is lead by depression and selfishness", he added. Ahmad said that the Martyr's heart is of passion, love and purity while the heart of a Suicidal is full of hatred, darkness, and despair.

"I lived with Martyrs for 14 years, I've seen how they act and how pure and sacred their path is.", he said. Ahmad explained how honest and kind the Martyrs were in prison before Black and Whitethey were martyred by the enemy. They deprived themselves from essential needs in order to make others happy.

Ahmad added that Martyrs do not like violence nor do they seek to kill, but they are walking the path of Imam Hussein (a.s) as he said: "...And I am not taking up arms in order to make merry, or be ecstatic over what I possess. I am not making mischief, nor exercising oppression. But I am ready to fight for the sole goal of seeking reform of the ummah of my grandfather, the Prophet of Allah (P.B.U.H). I want to enjoin good and forbid evil and guide the affairs of the people as my grandfather (P.B.U.H), and my father Ali Bin Abi Talib (AS), were doing..."

Ahmad ended by saying that we are all granted the path of the great Martyrs. If it wasn't for them, we would have been drowning in the filthy river of autocracy and repression.
