Stressing that the immediate priority is to avert the danger of a war, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, expressed hope that the US and its allies would refrain from taking any unilateral action against Syria.
Nebenzya made his remarks following a closed-door UN Security Council's meeting requested by Bolivia to discuss the US threats to attack Syria.
"The threat to international peace and security is a violation of the UN charter. We're very concerned with the situation and this dangerous escalation. We hope that there will be no point of no return, that the US and their allies will refrain from military action against the sovereign state," Nebenzya noted, adding that the "immediate priority is to avert the danger of war."
He further considered that the US recent statements were "bellicose", noting that "we cannot exclude any possibilities".
Nebenzya expressed hope that there would be serious dialogue to avoid any dangerous escalation of the events.
The Russian envoy also noted that his country will call for an open UN Security Council meeting on Syria to be held soon with the participation of the UN Secretary-General.
