Syrian Army Nears Total Recapture of Damascus
Local Editor
Syrian army forces are close to cementing control over the entire capital under local deals with militants after a six-year war that has ravaged suburbs of Damascus and caused population displacements.
Meanwhile, militants evacuated some of the last Damascus districts under their control, shattering their dream of one day seizing the capital and toppling a five-decade-old regime.
Over 2,000 civilians and militants evacuated the Qabun district on Sunday, after similar departures from the Barzeh and Tishrin neighborhoods earlier last week.
The Syrian army now controls almost all the capital, while in the east, militants now only hold a part of the Jobar district, most of which is destroyed.
In the south, the Tadamun and Hajar al-Aswad neighborhoods as well as the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmuk are now mostly controlled by terrorists including Daesh [the Arabic acronym for ‘ISIS/ISIL'].
The so-called reconciliation deals that led to the latest evacuations from the capital have dealt a heavy blow to the armed groups, following their defeat in the northern city of Aleppo in December.
